J2s END THEIR SEASON ON A HIGH

Gorey J2 entertained Ashbourne on Sunday last in what was the final league fixture of the season. They ended on a high with a 24 - 13 victory over a very good Ashbourne side. Both sides were evenly matched with probably the younger Gorey side deserving their victory on a very windy day. Ashbourne started with the wind at their backs and really did not capitalise on it as they had only a 6 - 3 advantage at halftime. The match came to life on the restart when Heino Gaiser crossed for the opening try. Conor Butler converted. Gorey kept the pressure on and further good work by the forwards saw Ross Doyle cross for an excellent try which again Conor Butler converted. Ashbourne played their best rugby for the next ten minutes and were finally rewarded when they crossed for a try, which they converted, to reduce Gorey's lead to 17 - 13. But it was not long until Gorey restored their two score lead when, from broken play, Lar Kinsella weaved his way through the Ash defence to score a fine individual try, which Sean Carty converted, to leave the final score of 24 - 13 to the hosts.

This has been a break through year for a lot of this team, as the majority of them are under 21, and really showed character all season to finish in the top half of the league. Gorey had some big performances with Stephen Triggs, Stanley Hayden and William Rothwell the pick of the pack while Lar Kinsella, Conor Butler and Sean Carty showed well in the backs.
