GOREY J2s WIN AGAINST WICKLOW   03/03/2019

GOREY J2s WIN AGAINST WICKLOW

In their final home league fixture Gorey J2 entertained Wicklow in Clonattin on Saturday last and came away with a victory on a 15 - 7 scoreline.

With little to separate the teams Gorey’s good start into the wind was the difference at the end.

Gorey started with some big carries from James Mulligan & Lloyd Stevens making hard yards.

On fifteen minutes Morne Kemp started a series of phases just inside the Gorey half and with support Gorey moved deep into the visitors 22.  Kemp was on hand to force his way over to score the opening try.

Wicklow were not long in responding as they put some good phases together and when Seamus O’Brien went over and Ben Armstrong converted they were in the lead 7 - 5.

That was how it stayed until the break as both teams worked hard with both defenses dominating.

The second half was nip and tuck, but Gorey scored a crucial try early. Some lovely inter-play between the backs and the forwards took them deep inside the Wicklow ‘22.

A number of strong carries saw James Mulligan restore Gorey’s lead for Morne Kemp to add the conversion to leave the score at 12 - 7.

The next twenty minutes was mainly contested in the middle area with Morne kemp adding a further penalty for Gorey to extend their advantage to 15 - 7 and leave two scores between the sides.

That was to end the scoring as both teams tried hard in difficult conditions.

Gorey had some good performances with Lloyd Stephens, Willie Rothwell and Liam Molloy the pick of the forwards. Jack Willougby, Henry Kennedy and Morne Kemp showed well in the backs.

Next week Gorey travel to Enniscorthy for their last league game of the season.
