J1 vs Ashbourne   08/11/2021

All square in Ashbourne

In another low scoring game Gorey had to be content with a share of the spoils when after 12 minutes of extra time Ashbourne finally cracked the 13 man Gorey defence when scoring a late try out wide to tie the teams 10 all.

Gorey kicked off into the gale force wind and from the off took the game to the home side.

it was the visitors  who settled and some big carries from Isaac Porter  and Jordan Ahearn helped Gorey get over the gain line. A number of infringements  gave Gorey the first chance to score, but  as they mauled towards the line they were deemed to have infringed, penalty to Ashbourne.

Gorey kept up the pressure but Ashbourne’s defence held as the visitors squandered a couple of scoring chances. But it was Ashbourne who finally opened the score as Gorey moved the ball out of defence Max Samuel intercepted to go in for a try against the run of play.

Ashbourne grew in confidence for the remainder of the half but as with Gorey could not find away through the visitors defence.

The second half saw Gorey turn with the wind and immediately were on the offensive with a number of phases taking them deep into the home 22. An early penalty attempt saw Morne Kemp’s attempt shave the outside of the post.

But it did not take Gorey long to return some strong running and carries took them to the line,  for Eoin Walsh to go over Morne Kemp added the conversion.

Gorey kept up the pressure and another Morne Kemp penalty put 5 between the teams. Ashbourne rallied but struggled to get out of their own half as Gorey kept the pressure on.

But again yellow cards cost Gorey as they played out the last 15 minutes with 14 and in the end with 13. Despite the numerical disadvantage it was not until 12 minutes into injury time after a backs to the wall defence Ashbourne Max Samuel finally scored in the corner for his second  try to draw the sides level. The conversion attempt went wide as the ref finally blew his whistle to end the game.

Gorey will welcome the break as it will give them time to get some of their injured players back.

Gorey had some positive performances with Morne Kemp Darren McGrath the pick of the backs Kevin Browne Eoin Walshe and Isaac Porter showed well in the forwards.

The league will resume on the Nov 28th when Gorey welcome Suttonians to Clonattin kick off 2.30.
