GOREY LADIES WIN AT GREYSTONES

The Gorey Senior Ladies were on the road this week in the Leinster League and this week they had Greystones, both teams needing the win for different reasons.

Greystones were hot on the heels of Longford and Balbriggan for the playoff places and Gorey needing the win to stay top of the table. Gorey meant business from the off and after a few minutes quick hands from the zippy back line got the ball out wide to fullback Ann Cummisky who dotted down under the posts. Jessica Foote converted.

Greystones big ball carriers took turns smashing up the ball through the Gorey defence. Centres Aoife Crowe and Ciara Tomkins made tackle after tackle to keep them at bay. Some big carries from Dee Farrell and Nuala Kelly set the standard for the Gorey ladies and it wasn't long before they were back on the score sheet, the Greystones scrum half cleared the lines with a box kick and it landed in Katie Doyles hands. Her dancing feet set up the play and after some quick hands from out half Ciara Breen set up winger Lorraine Gahan to score.

Just before half time Aoife Crowe dispossessed her opposite number and ran in unopposed to score. Greystones found it hard to keep the Gorey scrum half Lauren Farrell quiet. The second half told a different story with Greystones playing most of their rugby in the Gorey half. They had 15-20 minutes of it in Goreys 22 but credit to the Gorey ladies for keeping them at bay. Gorey penalty count started to rise and after what the referee deemed one to many, Gorey saw them lose Number 8 Maeve Farrell to the bin for 10 minutes. Gorey showed their strength in depth and even with emptying their bench still stuck to their game plan and showed their dominance. With fresh legs on the pitch they went up another gear with some huge tackles and turn overs from Eimear Hickey, Maeve Farrell and Sinead Brennan. Just before the final whistle the new looking backline combined and put Katie Doyle in for a try in the corner.

Gorey have a top of the table clash next Sunday 21st February against Barnhall. A win against the only team to defeat Gorey this year would mean the Gorey ladies will have secured top spot in the Leinster League.
