Gorey RFC J1s stay well in the hunt for Div 1A

Gorey's Div 1A League replay, of their cancelled match against Monkstown, was played on Sunday with both teams needing the points for different reasons. Gorey, who are still in contention for the league, needed to win at least and if things went their way, secure a bonus point, to keep the pressure on local rivals Enniscorthy.

The game started with Gorey playing with the strong breeze, but the early exchanges saw them having to soak up the pressure, as the visitors came out with all guns blazing.

Slowly Gorey began to get a foothold in the game and on ten minutes, a turnover in the middle of the field, saw the alert Stephen Duke move his backs, Eoin Walshe took it on and released Andrew Walsh to go over for the opening try. Stephen Duke converted. For the next 25 minutes the game was played mainly in the Gorey half, as Monkstown dug deep, but the home defence frustrated them at every turn. But on the 38 minute Gorey struck when the pack worked their way into the Town half. Continued pressure eventually saw William Earle crash over for Gorey's second try, Stephen Duke converted.

The second half Gorey played into the wind and settled into some rhythm, but were still not firing on all cylinders. On the sixty fifth minute try number three arrived as Gorey opted for a scrum ten metres out. Monkstown infringed on a number of occasions and finally the referee had enough and he awarded a penalty try. Gorey were now in bonus point territory and duly went in search for try number four. With just five minutes left on the clock a kick to the corner saw Gorey mauled for the line only to be held up. But the ensuing scrum saw them finally get the bonus point, when Jordan Ahern crossed, to the delight of the home support.

The final score was what Gorey needed to put them level with Enniscorthy, at the top of Division 1A, and with only two games left in the league it looks like this league is going to go down to the wire. The Gorey pack played well to a man with Willie Earle, Fergal Bolger the pick of the pack. Eoin Walshe, Andrew Walsh and man of the match Stephen Duke were outstanding in the backs.

Next week sees Gorey play New Ross in the second round of the Provincial Towns cup in Clonattin with kick off at 3 pm.
