Gorey vs Kilkenny Towns Cup

Gorey bow out of Towns Cup

Gorey firsts hosted Killkenny in the second round of the Towns Cup at Clonattin on Sunday last, 19th Feb.

In what was a closely fought game Killkenny edged out the hosts 5 points to 3 in a typical towns cup match where no quarter was asked or given.

The home side will be kicking themselves as the statistics will show they had the lions share of possession and territory but could not turn that advantage into points against a very determined Killkenny team.

Gorey started the brighter and the much smaller Gorey pack proved well able to deal with their much larger opponents. The home team pressed deep into the Killkenny 22 on a number of occasions but just could not find the opening to put a score on the board.

Killkenny worked their way out of their half and a subtle box kick saw the Killkenny winger collect to run in their only score.

Gorey were soon back on the attack and some big carries by Phil Horan and Adrian Copeland put Killkenny on the back foot. Gorey were awarded a penalty and Clinton Furney kicked between the posts to leave the score at 5 3. It is hard to believe that this was to be the final score as both teams traded penalty attempts with neither having any success.

The second half started with both sides defending very well with very little opportunity or space for either set of backs to express themselves. Gorey moved the ball wide at every opportunity to number 13 John Mannion but good Killkenny defending snuffed out this threat.

The game moved into the last quarter with the home team in search of that elusive score that would make the difference. Unfortunately for Gorey time was not on their side and Killkenny did just enough to advance into the next round.

Gorey had some big performances with Michael Woods Adrian Copeland and Phil Horan the pick of a hard working forward unit Matt Bater Colin Pevoy and John Mannion were the pick of the backs.

The club and the team would like to thank all of those supporters who turned up to give such fantastic support.

Gorey have two games left in the league with Athy at home in both first and seconds next Sunday in the penultimate league fixtures, a ding dong battle is definitely guaranteed.

The club will also host ladies day on that day with the proceeds going to breast cancer research. The club would like to thank the marvellous support at the cup match and hope to see you all again next Sunday.
