Under 13s Win South East Final

Gorey RFC under 13 team met New Ross RFC on a glorious Sunday morning to play the long awaited South East Final in New Ross.

The conditions were perfect, sunshine and the ground a little soft underfoot, the crowd were eager and the players were anxious.

This was the third occasion that these two teams met this season and it showed. The game started off with a lot of hard tackles and neither side giving the other any room to run the ball. Gorey stuck to the basic's and it paid off when Liam Molloy burst across the line to score, which was duly converted by Jack O Mahoney.
Gorey took their eye of the game for a few seconds , which you can't do with a team of New Ross's calibre, and they were punished when the Ross number 12 side stepped and rolled past no less than 4 Gorey players to score 5 points.

Ross were unfortunate not to convert the try just narrowly missing the target.

5 points to 7 and all were anxious to see how Gorey would handle it. Every Gorey player on the field stood up and was counted, Gorey dug deep and brought their game up to a new level. Joseph Naughton intercepted a Ross
pass and jetted past 3 defender's. And as Joseph is a very considerate and kind lad and true to form he placed the ball down under the post to afford his number 10 an easy kick, Jack O Mahoney obliged. Charlie McGuckian was as usual all over the field and doing the job of two players, Gorey were camped out on the Ross line for 8 phases of play and Charlie went straight at the line 3 times before the gap was found.

True to form New Ross kept their head and came back at Gorey with everything, including the kitchen sink, Their big number 4 was handed the ball and nothing was going to stop him and he scored a well-deserved try.

Looking back up the field you could see the Gorey players lying on the ground in his wake.

The final score New Ross 10 Gorey 21.

The player of the match was selected by the Leinster South East Representative, the President of New Ross and the referee and this went to the Gorey number 9 Charlie Mc Guckin.

It was great to see that the referee was complimented and thank by both side as he kept the game flowing and gave the boys an explanation of all his decisions.

To make the day more special, when the team arrived back in Clonnattin the club was full due to the 1st XV game against Kilkenny and the boys were met by the President of Gorey RFC and given a hero's welcome.

Many thanks to all who travel in support of the team, it was much appreciated.
