U16s Girls Gorey v Portlaois 2012-02-27 13:36:00

Gorey RFC hosted a very successful Action Breast Cancer awareness day on Sunday Feb 26 at their grounds in Clonattin.

Kicking off the festivities was their Under 16 girls team playing a Spring Series match against Portlaoise. The two sides met the previous November in Portlaoise, when the Gorey girls emerged victorious. On this occasion, the visiting team provided a sterner test of Gorey's skills. Both sides showed great appetite for physicality, and Gorey's scrum half Nicola Mc Grath lacked nothing in the bravery stakes to keep the local team moving upfield at every breakdown. The visitors were two converted tries to the good however following great play by their No 11, who was only denied a third following great work by Gorey's number 8, who cut across from the other side of the pitch to deny a certain score at the corner. At this point the Gorey girls showed no signs of giving up, and were rewarded with a great score following a sustained period of recycling possession, with Gorey's number 1 Caoimhe Molloy getting the touchdown. Local outhalf Lauren Farrell then doubled Gorey's tally but was unlucky with both conversion attempts.

They fought gamely till the end, but Portlaoise emerged the victors, 19/10 in a great advertisement for the girls' game.

Next up for the girls is Wicklow, in Gorey RFC, next weekend.
