Gorey RFC Under 14's win Leinster League Opener

Fri 5th Oct '12   Carlow 5 - Gorey 26

On Friday evening last Gorey RFC Under 14’s squad travelled to Carlow for their Leinster League opener.

Having narrowly defeated a strong Carlow team two weeks previously in the South East League the Gorey players were in determined mood to up the intensity significantly in this return fixture.

From the kick off Gorey attacked the Carlow line repeatedly with powerful ball carrying from forwards Shane Stokes, Cameron Reynolds and Lloyd Stephens. Rucking well, Gorey dominated the opening exchanges setting a pattern for a superb first half performance. Carlow were shaken by the increased tempo of the Gorey play and were run ragged by the Gorey backline who were rewarded with a superbly worked try on 8 minutes. Cahill O Reilly touching down under the posts following handling of the highest standard from centres Michael Duke and Stephen Naughton working off crucial fast delivery by scrum half Charlie McGuckin and out half Fionn O’Loughlin. Full back Killian Pierce, kicking superbly added the points.

Gorey were really fired up for this contest and continued to pound out phases of solid attack play. Prop Dylan Slator returned from injury with a stellar front row performance in company with hooker Liam Molloy and stand out loose head Tom Cleary.

On 26 minutes, following relentless forward rucking by P.J. Barnes, Eoin Molloy, Shane Stokes, Cameron Reynolds, Lloyd Stephens and hard tackling Andy Kinsella Gorey centre Joseph Naughton split a panicking Carlow defence. Support outside from hard charging winger Jack Minogue took Gorey deep into the Carlow 22 with only a last gasp tackle from the Carlow full back preventing a certain try.

From the ensuing Carlow scrum Gorey drove forward winning the ball against the head. A glorious pick and go from Lloyd Stephens delivered a magnificent Gorey try with replacement out half Jack O’Mahony adding the points. Gorey went in at half time leading 14 – 0 but this tie was far from finished as a contest.

Gorey restarted and from the off Carlow came at them with a fierce passage of forward attack play and running from their formidable centres. It was to no avail however as the Gorey defensive line handled all that Carlow could throw at them. Counter rucking the Carlow attack,
Gorey secured possession after an enormous tackle from centre Mikey Duke forced a Carlow knock on. From the Gorey scrum Gorey No 8, Shane Stokes picked and drove at the Carlow defence offloading to Mikey Duke in close support who opened up the Carlow centres before offloading inside to Charlie McGuckin to score under the posts. Out half Jack O Mahony who kicked superbly all evening added the points.

From the restart Carlow showed great spirit and put Gorey under pressure but again to no avail. Counter rucking fiercly Gorey secured excellent secure possession. Superb kicking from hand by Jack O’Mahony allowed winger Jack Minogue the opportunity to give the Carlow full back some torrid moments throughout the half. More of the same from the Gorey pack soon after, supplied clean possession at the breakdown with Charlie McGuckin again releasing his hard charging backline. Top quality handling across the Gorey line resulted in a sublime offload by Joseph Naughton releasing winger Cathal O’Reilly who completed the move with his second try of the evening. O’Mahony’s conversion attempt from out wide on the left touchline shaved the left hand upright, going narrowly wide on this occasion. The large crowd in attendance were generous with their applause for this particular passage of open play. 26 – 0 to Gorey.

Replacement left wing Jack Cullen, loose head Carl Clarke, 2nd row Tom Higgins, hooker Liam Molloy, scrum half Eoin Buckley, and wing Conor O’Toole slotted comfortably into their respective positions maintaining the Gorey intensity into the final period of action.
Carlow kept pushing forward and were finally rewarded
with a late try which was the last action of a bruising evening.

Well done to all the Gorey squad on a superb display of top quality and highly entertaining rugby.
