Gorey J2s Kick Off With A Win

Gorey J2 having no game last weekend, kicked off their Leinster league campaign with a hard earned win over a very experience Kilkenny side.

It was the visitors who settled into their stride first as Gorey struggled to get any momentum. And so, it was no surprise when the visitors scored from a block down as Gorey tried to clear their line.

A further quick Kilkenny penalty looked as if Gorey were in for a difficult evening. But the home side gradually put some phases together with John Fanning and Conor Owley leading by example. Slowly Gorey worked their way into the visitors 22 for Niall "The Bull "Cousins to go over under the posts for Glen Gleeson to convert.

Kilkenny were next to score when awarded a penalty to leave the scores at 10 - 7 at halftime.

Again the second half started with Kilkenny asking the questions and after 15 mins scored another penalty. The home team with John Sykes were now upping the ante as the game entered the final quarter, a Glen Gleeson penalty reduced the deficit, for Kilkenny to add another penalty to leave the score at 16 - 10 with eight minutes on the clock. The home team introduced some fresh faces and these were to have a major impact on the game.

Gorey now went in search of a score knowing that a converted try would win the game. They were awarded a penalty and kicked for the corner, a good lineout saw Gorey work the ball through the pack, quick ball through the backs saw Gorey stopped just short of the line. The following sequence of play saw the recently introduced scrum half Rory O Donoghoe reach across the line for a well deserved try. This left Glen Gleeson with a conversion attempt knowing that between the posts would put the home team in the lead. This he did with 2 minutes on the clock and one point between the teams. The final whistle eventually sounded much to the delight of the home team.

The Gorey pack played well to a man with Paul Swaine Colin Power the pick and  Johnny Sykes Glen Gleeson and Wayne Peavoy showing well in the backs.
