GOREY J1s LOSE TO MALAHIDE

18 Nov 2012

Gorey first team travelled to Malahide on Sunday last and suffered only their second defeat of the campaign. Gorey actually started the brighter but within a minute were to suffer a double blow as injuries to Ed Warren and Steven Gardiner saw them reshuffle the pack with the game in its infancy. Things were to get worst for the visitors as the home team capitalised on a sloppy ball to score in the corner.

Within minutes Malahide were again back inside the Gorey 22 and following a mix up in the Gorey defence scored try number two.

Gorey got on the score sheet with P.J.C lince penalty.

Malahide were to inflict further misery on the Gorey defence when they scored their third and final try to leave the score at 15 - 3.

Gorey had a chance to reduce the arrears but also could have been further behind but for some resolute defending as the half drew to an end. The second half saw Gorey  come more into the game, but they found it hard to break down the Malahide defence.

Eventually Gorey got a footing in the Malahide 22 and finally got over for a try when Clinton Furney was quickest to react to put just a score between the teams. Malahide came right back at Gorey but could not breakdown a resolute defence as Gorey began to grow in stature.

The backrow of Michael Woods Jordan Ahearne and Ben Horan were outstanding as were all as they repelled Malahide time after time. Eventually they finally got on the scoresheet with a penalty to leave the score 18 - 8 with ten minutes left on the clock.

Following the restart Gorey worked their way into the home teams 22 and were awarded a penalty which Aidan O Brien kicked. This was to be the final score to leave Gorey with a loosing bonus point and more important to deny Malahide a bonus point as we reach the turning point in the league.

This is a very young Gorey team and they will learn a lot from this defeat against a very experienced Malahide.

There are no matches next weekend for any of the senior teams. The next home game for the firsts is Clane on Sunday December 2nd.
