Gorey Get Back On Track

Gorey senior firsts team got their league campaign back on track with a comprehensive win over Clane on a score of 45 - 12. The match was played on a cracking night for rugby with no wind and a dry pitch. The home crowd were treated to a feast of tries as Gorey set about their task with an urgency and determination that sometimes did not always yield the deserved result but was always entertaining as Gorey tried to play a brand of fast and open rugby.

The ever present Matt Batter was the first to cross the Clane line after some good work by the pack with Aidan O Brien converting.  Gorey were soon back on the attack again and sustained Gorey pressure saw the visitors line breached again by Batter. Clane rallied and managed to score a well worked try as the home team relaxed a little. That was the way it stayed until halftime as Gorey had chances but somehow could not put the points on the board.

The second half started with Clane exerting some pressure on the home defence, Gorey cleared down field and a great tackle by P.J. Clince saw the Clane winger knock on to the Gorey chasers for a kick ahead for Ben Horan to touch down. Aidan OBrien converted.

Clane  were finding Gorey hard to contain and when Adrian Copeland side  stepped not one but two defenders to race in from 35 metres to secure the bonus point Gorey were well on their way to a home win. Two further tries from the young guns of Jordan Ahearne and Michael Woods saw the scoring complete for Gorey with Clane fitting one of their own in between.

The final score of 45 12 saw the Gorey support retire to the bar happy.

Goreys youth system is now coming in to play and the stars in the pack on a good night for the Gorey were all under 20 with Jordan Ahearne, Micheal Woods and Ciaran Smith the pick. Matt Batter, Aidan O Brien and Thomas Sheehy worked hard in the backs. Next Sunday sees Gorey firsts and seconds travel to Killkenny for a crucial top of the table clash before the Christmas break. Gorey 3rds have a home game on Saturday at 2.30.
