GOREY PROGRESS TO SECOND ROUND OF TOWNS CUP 

Gorey advanced to the second round of the Provincial Towns cup after a pulsating match on a score of 22 - 17 over the 2011 Towns cup winners Dundalk.

Gorey played with the wind in the first half and were soon to cause the visitors major problems as Thomas Sheehy sent a number of Garryowens in on top of the Dundalk fullback and one of these led to the opening try as Sheehy ran on to gather and touch down.  Aidan O'Brien converted.

Gorey kept the pressure up and fantastic mauling by the pack saw Michael Woods race over for to extend the lead to 12 - 0.

Gorey were not done yet and the pack again took the ball on the spread it wide and John Mannion finished in the corner to take the score to 17 - 0

Half time was approaching and Dundalk moved the ball to work their way into the Gorey 22.  Gorey defended well but somehow Dundalk got across the line in the corner. That saw the ref sound the halftime whistle as a large shower came over the grounds.

The shower passed by and the wind died down as the second half started. Gorey again worked the ball into the Dundalk 22 and an ensuing penalty saw Gorey kick to the corner. From the lineout Gorey secured good ball and drove towards the line for the man of the match Steven Gardiner to pirouette over the line. Gorey were now 22 - 5 up and looked confident on the ball. But no team can control a match for the total game and it was inevitable that a team of Dundalks talent would score and so they did to take the score to 22 - 12. Gorey did not panic and controlled the game for long periods of the final 20 mins with a superior scrum and lineout. Gorey did leak a score but it was to the sound of the final whistle and the cheers of the huge home following.

It is hard to pick out any player in what was a fantastic team performance by this young Gorey team. But Stephen Gardiner at 18 years gave a towering performance and was definitely man of the match.
