GOREY LADIES MAKE HISTORY

History was made in Clonattin on Sunday afternoon with the first ever senior ladies team for Gorey Rugby Club taking to the field.  They were drawn against Old Belvedere in the shield.  Winning the toss Gorey opted to play with the wind to their backs.  For most of the first half the match was played in Old Belvedere's side.  After 15 minutes Gorey put the first score on the board with a try from Sarah Killick, who touched down under the goal.  She then converted for an extra two points.

The game was hard fought for the next 15 minutes with the play moving up and down the field.  Michelle Morris broke through the Old Belvedere defence to score a try.  Giving a half time score of Gorey 12, Old Belvedere 0.

With the wind in their faces Gorey's defences were put to the test in the second half.  With excellent play from the forwards Aoife, Caitlin, Aisling and Samantha who broke down play from Old Belvo.  Old Belvo finally got on the score board with a try from Ruth Cleary but failed to convert.  It was a game of excellent rugby with both sides being evenly matched.  Gorey achieved their first win with the final score being Gorey 12, Old Belevedere 5.  With excellent play from Aoife Farrell she was awarded woman of the match.

Gorey team consisted of: Aoife Farrell, Suzanne Canavan (Capt), Aisling Bolger, Caitlin Crowe, Alex Doyle, Kathryn Blood, Emer Breen, Samantha Wafer, India McGirr, Maeve Farrell, Chloe Breen, Edel Coade-Morris, Niamh O'Brien, Sarah Killick, Michelle Morris, Grainne Deacon, Shannon Desousa Levingston, Yvonne Howard, Brid Kavanagh, Deirdre Farrell, Nichola Deacon.
