Gorey RFC J1s bonus win at New Ross

Gorey seniors resumed their Leinster league campaign with an away fixture to New Ross on Sunday last.

Gorey travelled to South Knock  on a ideal day for rugby knowing that nothing short of a bonus point win was required if there were to have any chance of promotion and hope that somehow Malahide would slip up at home to Clane.

This would have set up a showdown next Sunday in Gorey when the Dubliners visit Clonattin for the final league fixture of the year.

Unfortunately Gorey kept their part of the bargain and secured the bonus point win on a score of 26 - 3. But  Malahide had other ideas and ran out convincing winners against Clane.

Gorey started well and from a line out set up a good maul for Jordan Ahearne to go over for the opening try, Aidan O Brien converted. It was not long until Gorey were again back on the attack as they spread the ball wide at every opportunity and John Manion was unlucky to be stopped just short. But the Gorey pressure soon paid off and that man Ahearne crossed for his second try for O Brien to convert to take the score to 14 - 0.

Gorey somehow took their foot off the gas and allowed Ross back into the game and the home team were unlucky not to get on the score sheet as they ran some good lines but failed to capitalise.

The second half started as the first had ended as Gorey struggled for the form that saw them so rampant in the first 20 minutes. Ross eventually got their name on the score sheet with a penalty. Gorey found their form and worked some good phases for Steven Gardiner to crash over to put breathing space between the teams after some find work by the pack.

Gorey were now in search of the all important bonus point as the final 10 minutes approached. Ross were giving away a lot of penalties as they tried to curtail the revitalised visitors. It was from  a line out that Gorey worked their way towards the line for 19 year old Jordan Ahearne to cap a man of the match performance with his third try.

Gorey had some fine performances from Ben Horan, Michael Woods in the pack with Killian Breen, Matt Batter and Richard Jones the pick of a resolute backline.

Gorey have Malahide at home next Sunday in both first and seconds respectively in what should be two cracking games with their still an outside chance that the seconds can win their league.
