GOREY TRAVEL TO KILKENNY RFC

Gorey Seniors kicked off their season on Tuesday night last with an away  game to Killkenny in the postponed South East League tie.

Gorey travelled to the Marble City with an injury hit squad and had to call on a number of their under19s to make up the required number.

The visitors started the game brightly and after soaking up sustained Killkenny pressure worked their way up field. With the Killkenny line in sight and a two man overlap, a sloppy ball saw the Killkenny  centre intercept to run the length of the  field under the posts for a 7 - 0 lead.

A further Killkenny try saw the home team stretch their lead to 12 - 0.

With half-time approaching a quick thinking Brian Dennehy followed up by Stephen Duke saw the former finish off the try of the game after good Gorey pressure. The home team lead 12 - 5 at half-time and this was probably a true reflection of the game.

The second half saw Killkenny first out of the blocks and they crossed for their third try after a mix up at the lineout by the visitors. Gorey were to fall further behind 24 - 5 before they realised they could also play rugby. From the 30 minute  mark on, it was all Gorey as they moved the ball with pace and direction, tight head George Walshe finished off an excellent maul to reduce the deficit.  Under 19 Winger Jack Cleary who was having a fantastic game finished off a Steven Duke chip through to add another try. The next score saw Gorey right back in the game when JP Redmond crossed for Gorey's fourth try to leave the score at 24 - 20 with 5 minutes remaining.

Gorey threw caution  to the wind and almost reaped the reward of what looked at one time like an unlikely win, when JP  Redmond  was stopped just short of the line, only for the final whistle to sound after a great sporting game between two very committed sides.

Gorey had some good individual performances from Ciaran Smith, Kenneth O'Rourke and George Walshe in the pack. While Jack Cleary, Steven Duke and Brian Dennehy were the pick of a make-shift backline.
