Captains Message

To be appointed the captain of Gorey Rugby Football Club in its 50th year is a great honour. An honour which I aspire to emulate my previous Captains.

My earliest memory of Gorey RFC is of my first rugby match at age nine in Carlow. I didn’t have a Gorey jersey or a gum shield at the time. So, when I had stopped crying after burning my mouth moulding a hot gumshield, I played my first rugby match in a white Gareth Brooks T-Shirt. Since then I’ve been lucky enough to have played rugby in many different places, clubs and environments. I have never felt the same bond or level of community as I do when I put on the Gorey Jersey.

There is a great atmosphere around the senior team this year, mostly because we are a young team with lots of ability and huge ambition. I have no doubt as captain if we can get the players we have on the same page great things will happen. I feel lucky that I have been made captain in a time when we have so many leaders in the team. This makes the captaincy a lot easer as the trust I have in these men is huge.

We wouldn’t be in the position we are in today if it wasn’t for the work that is and has been done by the minis and under age section of the club which is proving its success on our home-grown senior team and in the great players it has been churning out over the last number of years. It doesn’t stop there either we have a vibrant women’s section in the club which has been decorated with several accolades and representative players.

I would like to wish our Mini’s, Youths and Ladies the best of luck for the 2018 season in this our 50th year.

I would like to finish by thanking everyone who has helped me and many others over the time I have been in this club. I have seen this club climb to great success and witnessed the support the people in this club have given to families that have gone through hard times. This is what makes our rugby club so special.

A club is not made of grass or blocks or gym equipment. What makes a club great is the people committed to it, and we have great people.
