NARROW DEFEAT FOR GOREY J2s IN MONKSTOWN

Gorey J2 travelled to Dublin hoping to extend their good run that has them in second place in the league. After two good home wins in the last two weeks a much-depleted Gorey, due to injuries and call ups to the J1’s, started the game well but failed to take advantage of one or two half chances.

From around the fifteenth minute Monkstown took control as they scored the first of their three first-half tries.

Gorey struggled to put any meaningful phases together and two more tries for the home team saw them extend their lead to 17 - 0 at halftime.

But as they did in Boyne the second half saw Gorey up their game and they were duly awarded for their efforts. Cian Hadden directed the play as Gorey began to get a foothold in the Monkstown half. Good work by the pack eventually paid when Paul O Connor finally crossed to open Gorey’s account. Cian Hadden converted to leave 10 between the sides.

Gorey kept the pressure up and Alex Tucci went over for the referee to disallow what looked like a perfect try to let off the home team.

But Gorey kept the pressure up and when Cian Hadden saw space out on his left flank he kicked across field for Jack Willoughby to gather and go over for a cracking try to leave the score at 17 - 12.

Monkstown rallied with a penalty putting two scores between the sides.

But Gorey never gave up and pulled back another try in the dying minutes to leave three points between the sides at the final whistle.

Gorey having started slowly will be disappointed with this result as they know they are capable of better and just need to bring more consistency when it’s needed.

Richard Deering, Fergal Bolger and Tom Jameson were the pick of the forwards with David O’Neill, Jack Willoughby Paul O Connor and man of the match Cian Hadden showing well in the backs.
