GOREY’S J2s WIN IN DUNDALK

On Saturday last Gorey J2 travelled to Dundalk and came away with four precious points after a pulsating game that saw them edge out the home team on a score of 13 - 12.

This was as good a J2 game as one might see with both teams playing to
a very high standard. Despite a much better start than usual Gorey were down 9 0 as halftime approached. Dundalk landed three penalties and were full value as they had played some excellent rugby but could not breach a resolute Gorey defence.

The second half saw the visitors up their game with halfbacks Seamus Tomkins and Conor Butler taking control as they marshalled their team. Gorey opened their account seven minutes in with a Cian Hadden penalty. They were now putting some good phases together and again arrived in the home twenty two. Consistent retention of the ball finally saw Conor Butler cross to leave one between the sides. Gorey had their tails between their legs and as they grew in confidence were winning the exchanges all over the park.

This finally paid off when they again arrived in the home twenty two after some excellent work. A number of carries sucked in the home defence, the ever alert Conor Butler spotted the space out wide and from one side of the pitch landed the ball just on the home line for Cian Hadden to touch down for an excellent try. This put Gorey in front for the first time on a score of 13 9. But there were two sides in this game and within minutes Dundalk had reduced that lead to one with a penalty. With twenty minutes left both sides had their moments but it was the visitors who stood strong and came away with the victory after a fantastic game. Gorey had some excellent performances with Ben Mason Eoin Walsh and Ken Rothwell the pick of the forwards. But it was the backs who shone in this game with Conor Hatton David O Neill and man of the match Conor Butler outstanding on the day.

Gorey are away to Ashbourne next week.
