GOREY SENIOR MEN GET BACK TO WINNING WAYS

Last Saturday Gorey were at home to Boyne in what was a must-win game for the hosts. Gorey have started to show better form of late and bar the away game to Dundalk might consider themselves unlucky to lose a number of games by a one score margin.

The opening exchanges saw Boyne take the game to their hosts as they moved the ball well, and really, they were unlucky not to score.

For a brief period in that spell Gorey were in the visitors 22 but on the fifteenth minute Boyne were finally rewarded with a penalty which opened the score.

But from the restart they immediately gifted Gorey a chance to equalize and Steven Horan drew the teams level.

Gorey now settled and began to apply pressure on the visitors, a number of phases later Killian Breen was just stopped on the line, he popped the ball to Steven Gardiner to crash over for a well worked try.

Boyne responded and should have scored with the line at their mercy they knocked on much to the relief of the home side.

Gorey were again back inside the Boyne half and a flowing move through the backs saw David Shannon extend Gorey’s lead with Stevie Horan adding the conversion. 17 - 3 was how it was at halftime.

Boyne upped their game for the third quarter, but it was Gorey who landed the next score to extend their lead with a Stevie Horan long range penalty.

Boyne kept attacking but the Gorey defence was proving hard to breakdown with James Nolan leading the backline as they pressed and stifled the visitors attack time and time again.

The game was finally closed out in the sixty-eight minute when Gorey turned over at a breakdown, the ball was moved fast through the hands for Paul O’Connor to run in and Stevie Horan to convert to extend Gorey’s lead to 27 - 3.

Boyne never gave up and should have crossed for a try of their own but a knock on with the line in sight ended their cause as Gorey went on to close out for a crucial win as they head into the Christmas break.

The foundation for this win was a team performance with Steven Duke James Nolan and Gareth Bater the pick of the backs. But the backrow must come in for mention with Fergal Bolger in particular, Tom Jameson and man of the match Steven Gardiner in the engine room outstanding in the pack.
