GOREY J2s EDGE ASHBOURNE

Gorey J2s travelled to Ashbourne on Saturday last and after a hard fought game came away with a crucial win on a score of 9 - 5.

It was the home team who got off to the perfect start with only ten minutes on the clock. Playing into the strong wind they crossed after some big carries and some strong running saw them score the opening try.

Gorey settled and used the wind to great effect with Cian Hadden probing in behind the home defence with some lovely kicks.

Playing into the wind Ashbourne were forced to carry with Gorey being patient it was not long until they were on the score board. A penalty to Gorey and the wind behind him Cian Hadden had no problem in splitting the posts.

Another Hadden penalty late in the half saw Gorey go in front 6 - 5 after some great work from the forwards forced another penalty.

The Gorey backs were also running well with the Willoughby brothers, Sean Kinane and Brian Brooks showing some great footwork to get over the gain line. Before halftime Gorey had another penalty attempt but Aaron Davies was just wide.

The second half saw Gorey turn into the wind and immediately Ashbourne put the visitors under pressure. Gorey’s defence was good and they repelled the home attack. A strong run by Killian Breen saw him off load to Ben Mason who in turn moved it to the back line with Seamus Tomkins making some great yards on the wing.

The resulting phases saw Ashbourne penalised and Aaron Davies into the wind extended Gorey’s lead to 9 5.

The game became fractious as both teams ended the game down to 14 men.

Gorey were full value for their win after a workmanlike display.

Best for Gorey were Brian Brooks, Jack Willougby and Seamus Tomkins in the backs with Cormac Walsh, Eddie Horan and Dylan Gregan showing well in the forwards.

Gorey J2s have no game next Saturday.
