MIDLAND WARRIORS vs GOREY RFC Seconds

Gorey seconds made the long journey to Moate on Sunday to take on the Midland Warriors in the first round of the seconds Towns Cup. Gorey  went down 8 - 0 in a dour  match that probably should not have been played.

In good weather conditions but on an atrocious pitch  that resembled something out of a film set for the Somme, Gorey played up the hill in the first half and worked their phases well, but could not get a foothold in the Warriors 22. They tried to move the ball but found the underfoot conditions heavy going as the Warriors defence pushed up fast and hard. Gorey's Paul Swaine and Conor Owley worked well and had good support from Dean Redmond and Jordan Ahearne.

With 25 minutes on the clock Warriors came more into the game and took the lead when awarded a penalty in front of the posts.  This lifted the home side as they came more into the game for the last quarter.

Gorey turned around in the second half but conditions were getting so bad that it was even hard to stand up never mind kick the ball as the Warriors pinned Gorey in their 22 for long periods.  Try as they might Gorey's penalty count was to prove too costly as the game headed into the last quarter. Warriors closed out the game with two minutes left on the clock when they scored a try in the corner to take the score to 8 - 0.

Gorey will be dissapointed  to go out of the Towns Cup but on the day Midland Warriors deserved their victory.

Best for Gorey were Daragh O Leary in the lineouts and Willie Carney and Paul Swaine in the pack . Garrett Bater and Tommy Martin were the pick of the backs.
