Gorey J1s edge out Clondalkin   29/11/2015

Gorey travelled to Clondalkin last Saturday to complete the first phase of games in the Leinster League. Sitting in second place, and 5 points behind Enniscorthy, this was a must win game to keep their momentum going after a great start to the league.

The weather conditions of driving rain and a gale force wind cleared just before the kick off and, with an excellent pitch, both sets of supporters were hoping for an excellent game.

The game started with the visitors setting the pace. Playing into the strong wind Gorey carried the ball with good ground being made by the forwards. This pressure put the home team on the back foot with Jordan Aherne and Willie Earle in particular pressing hard. A penalty into the corner saw Gorey set up a maul for Steven Horan to touchdown. Clondalkin then bounced back with penalty to register their first score.

On the tenth minute Gorey scored another try when from a similar position after securing a good lineout they again worked the ball well for Jordan Aherne to cross the line. The next ten minutes saw both teams exchanging territory and both scoring penalties to leave the score at 13 - 6. With ten minutes remaining in the half, Gorey stepped up another gear with Stephen Gardiner and Adrian Copeland carrying well. Further pressure and good hands saw Aherne finish off to extend Gorey's lead to 18 - 6 at halftime.

The second half saw Clon come more into the game and it was not long until that pressure reaped rewards. Good work by the home team saw them go over in the corner to reduce Gorey's lead to 18 - 11. Defences were really on top as scoring opportunities were hard to come by. Both teams huffed and puffed with a Stephen Duke penalty on fifty three minutes steadying the Gorey ship. Matt Bater at inside centre was marshalling his defence well to hold Clon at bay. Clon did manage to score another penalty as Gorey held on to secure a well earned win on a score of 21 - 14.

Gorey had some good performances from a number of players with Fergal Bolger, Darragh Bellanova and Stephen Gardiner the pick of a strong pack. Stephen Horan and Matt Bater did well in the backs with man of the match going to Jordan Aherne.
Next week sees Gorey take on Ashbourne, in Gorey, with a 2.30 kick off.
