GOREY LOSE OUT TO ENNISCORTHY IN J2S PROV TOWNS CUP TIE   14/02/2016

The 2016 J2's Provincial Towns Cup draw unfortunately pitted the two local rivals together for the third time this season.

Enniscorthy who are the reigning holders of the Cup, and also the current league leaders, arrived in Clonattin as firm favourites to advance, as they had won the two previous encounters, and are arguably as good as a lot of J1 teams competing in the lower divisions.

But the Towns Cup is littered with shock results over the years and Gorey were hoping to cause one here against their illustrious neighbours. With a dry sunny sky overhead the match kicked off with Scorthy playing with the strong wind behind them and it was not long until they got into their stride. Two successive penalties were missed by Jack Kelly. But the visitors were not going away without a score and quick hands through the backs saw Willie Dunne run in for the opening try. The next ten minutes saw Gorey put some good phases together and put the visitors under pressure. But a missed Clinton Furney penalty was all they had to show. Scorthy weathered the storm but the next phase saw Gorey's Ben Horan sin binned. Enniscorthy took full advantage and added a further try when winger Ger O Connor went over in the corner to extend their lead to 10 - 0.
Gorey rallied and gained some territory. Repeated penalty kicks to the corner saw Enniscorthy hold out as Gorey scorned a number of scoring chances that were to prove costly. 10 - 0 was how it was at halftime.

The second half saw Enniscorthy move up a gear, and saw Fiachra Ryan rounding off the try of the match, with phase after phase of Enniscorthy pressure eventually cracking the Gorey defence. Jack Kelly kick the conversion. Gorey again tried to put some phases together but Enniscorthy were not for cracking. The game was put to bed when a flowing move saw Jack Kelly split the Gorey defence with a pass that sent Arron Coleman in for another cracking try. A further try from Enniscorthy saw them run out comfortable winners on a score of 29 - 0. Gorey to be fair tried hard but lacked the cohesion when it mattered and really can have no complaints as Enniscorthy were the better team on the day.
