Gorey's J1s Celebrate Winning Division 2b

Gorey Win Division 2b

What started out last September on a saturday evening in Mullingar came to a conclusion on Sunday last in Clonnatin when Gorey first team won Division 2b with a game to spare. The final whistle sounded to scenes of wild jubilations as Gorey won their first ever Leinster league to secure Division 2a status for next season. If anyone thought that Athy were coming for a bus drive were mistaken as the Kildare lads put it up to the league leaders at every opportunity . Athy took the lead after Gorey were penalised at a ruck. It was not long until Gorey drew level with a Clinton Furney penalty. Gorey were slowly getting a foothold in the Athy half and Furney was just wide with another penalty attempt. The half was drawing to a close with Athy deep in the Gorey half when Gorey turned over at the breakdown, a quick ball through the hands saw Clinton Furney kick ahead to gather the ball as he crossed the line to what looked like a certain try only for the ref to disallow . The second half saw Gorey take more control with the forwards slowly getting on top with No 8 Phil Horan making good ground to release the backs. It was from one of these attacks that no 13Thomas Sheehy weaved his way through the Athy backs, only to be stopped just short . Another attack deep in the Athy 22 saw the lively Gorey no 6 Michael Woods block down the Athy scrum half to gather and crash over for the opening try. Garry Jones was just wide with the conversion.Gorey were now in full throttle as they closed down Athy at every breakdown Further Gorey pressure saw Gorey secure another two penalties for Garry Jones to slot over to the leave the final score at 14 3 to the home team.

On a great day for the Gorey club the forwards were well served with Ciaran Smith Isaac Porter Conor Owley and Michael Woods the pick of a hard working pack . The backs also showed well with Thomas Sheehy Colin Peavoy and Aidan O Brien the pick. The Leinster Prseident Mr. Stewart Bailey was on hand to present the trophy to Gorey captain Paul Wafer to the cheers of the delighted Gorey supporters.
