Gorey Under 14's start season with hard earned victory

Gorey under 14's began the new campaign on Saturday last with a ‘friendly' against a strong New Ross squad.

The game played in blazing sunshine at Clonattin started at a fierce pace with a very big New Ross team finding space with ease across the entire Gorey defensive line. A dominant Ross attack ran in 3 converted tries before the break leaving the current South East champions shell shocked and looking to regroup.

An excellent penalty slotted by Liam Molloy (watch out Dan Carter) registered Gorey's only points of the half.

With a mountain to climb after the interval, Gorey set about their task with excellent forward rucking and much improved distribution through the back line. 20 minutes into the half Mikey Duke, running an excellent line from centre drew the cover and released Joseph Naughton into space to crash over Gorey's first try. Liam Molloy added the points leaving the score at 21-10 in favour of the visitors. Naughton added his second try soon after with Molloy again adding the points as the game came to life.

Another try followed a pick and go from Gorey number 8 Lloyd Stevens after a phase of superb forward rucking into the Ross 22, Liam Molloy added the points.

A shell shocked Ross rallied with their excellent number 12 finding space in our backline to score a well taken but unconverted try.

With 5 minutes remaining Liam Molloy added a final unconverted try to secure an unlikely victory for the home team.

Wingers Conor O'Toole and Jack Minogue made some explosive runs out wide while Mikey Duke, Joseph Naughton, Owen Molloy, Dylan Slater, Sean Barden and Lloyd Stephens showed well throughout.

Final scoreline 29-26 in favour of a spirited home side.

Many thanks to all the parents who turned out to support the team.

Our entire squad played on the day with every player giving 100% for the club...well done to all.
