GOREY LADIES GO TOP
The Gorey Senior Ladies finally got to play at home last Sunday when they took on Athy RFC in the Leinster league. If Gorey could win they would find themselves back top of the table. Thankfully the bad weather stayed away for the duration of the game. Everyone that came out to watch the match were treated to some fabulous rugby from the Gorey girls.
Gorey managed to get their name on the score sheet early with a lovely try by Ann Cumiskey, Jessica Foote successfully converted. The Athy backs found it very difficult to handle the Gorey ladies. Gorey won a scrum against the head and quick thinking from Ciara Tomkins put Maeve Bolger in for a try, Jessica Foote was successful with the conversion again.
Straight after the restart Kathryn Blood turned over a ball in a ruck and passed the ball out to Ciara Breen who pinned her ears back and made her way over the try line in the corner. Before half time Ciara Breen noticed the full back was missing and kicked a lovely ball over the Athy girls heads and Roisin Murphy capitalised and gathered the ball and sprinted clear to score under the posts. Athy had no answer for Gorey's powerful play.
After the interval Gorey continued to dominate the game. Gorey won a scrum on the Athy 10 metre line and some quick thinking from Lauren Farrell confused the winger and she ran in uncontested. Jessica Foote again converted.
The game ended with the score at 31-0.
Best in the forwards were Kathryn Blood, Nuala Kelly and Clodagh Carroll and the backs best performers were Lauren Farrell, Roisin Murphy and Ciara Tomkins. Congratulations to Lauren Farrell for being named Player of the Day, she was presented with a trophy which was kindly sponsored by The Fowler.
